Community Activities to Beat Winter Isolation

Staying social in winter requires intention, and West Linn’s February calendar delivers opportunities to connect. The West Linn Lions Club hosts their annual Sausage and Kraut Dinner on Saturday, February 21, from 4:00 to 7:30pm at Resurrection Church community hall. The event features a German band, dancing, and communing with neighbors over Mt. Angel sausage and homemade sauerkraut.

The Adult Community Center continues weekly drop-in activities that welcome newcomers:

  • Knitting groups every Thursday from 10:00am to noon

  • Band Jam sessions on Wednesdays from 1:00 to 3:00pm

  • Book club gatherings on the second Wednesday of each month

  • Bridge on Mondays and Hand & Foot card tournaments

  • Writing groups on Tuesdays from 10:00 am to noon

Families can enjoy StoryWalk at Fields Bridge Park throughout February, combining fresh air with literacy. The library hosts Sensory Storytime and Family Storytime on February 8, giving parents a chance to meet other families while kids engage in age-appropriate activities.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Adventure Ready NW offers winter hiking skills classes at Tryon Creek State Natural Area, plus family snowshoe adventures on Mt. Hood scheduled for February 21. These guided experiences teach navigation and safety techniques while connecting you with others who love the outdoors.

Mental Health Strategies for Gray Days

Beating winter blues starts with recognizing how reduced sunlight affects your mood and energy. Getting outside during daylight hours, especially within two hours of waking, helps regulate your internal clock and boosts serotonin production. Even a 15-minute walk around your neighborhood on a cloudy day provides your body with the benefits it needs.

Light therapy and vitamin D supplementation can help when natural sunlight feels scarce. Focus on foods rich in vitamin D, like salmon, tuna, and eggs, or talk with your healthcare provider about appropriate supplements for your needs.

Regular movement remains your best defense against seasonal depression. Physical activity releases endorphins, improves sleep quality, and gives you a sense of accomplishment that counters the sluggishness winter can bring. The key is choosing activities you actually enjoy rather than forcing yourself through workouts you dread.

Making Your February Count

West Linn’s winter programming gives you multiple entry points to stay engaged and healthy. The Winter/Spring 2026 Activities Guide includes dozens of classes and programs, with registration still open for sessions starting now through spring.

Pick one or two activities that genuinely interest you and put them on your calendar. Showing up becomes easier when you’ve made a commitment, especially if you’ve paid for a class or told a friend you’ll meet them there. These small acts of planning transform good intentions into actual habits that carry you through the remaining winter weeks.

If you’re looking for a community that prioritizes year-round activity and connection, I’d be happy to share more about what makes West Linn such a welcoming place to call home.
